MWF 1000–1050 am

The uniqueness of Jerusalem as a center of spiritual longing and political and religious conflicts through the generations will be illuminated by examining Jewish and non-Jewish literature taken from Biblical, medieval and modern times. Included will be writings from the Prophets, Psalms, rabbinic legends; poetry from Judah Halevi through Amichai and Zelda; and stories by S. Y. Agnon, A. Oz, Y. H. Brenner, S. Hareven, and A. B. Yehoshua. Non-fiction writings such as biographies, essays, and correspondences will also be used to understand the multifaceted meanings of Jerusalem for all the people it has touched: Jews, Muslims, and Christians; inhabitants, conquerors, leaders and visitors. Films will be shown to enrich perceptions of Jerusalem.
