International Studies/Middle Eastern Studies 206: The Arab-Israeli Conflict

An examination of the dynamics of the Arab/Israeli conflict, from Ottoman times until the present day. The course will focus on the changing interests and positions of the parties involved: the Zionists (and the state of Israel), the Palestinians (and the Palestinian National Authority & Hamas), the Arab states and the important international players. The course will also explore the internal workings and conflicts within the major camps, and between the various parties.

Course Requirements

There will be weekly quizzes on the readings (which may take the form of an in-class quiz or a take-home short writing assignment), a midterm exam (TUESDAY, MARCH 10), and a final (MONDAY, MAY 4, 9am). In addition, a 5-page essay will be required of each participant at the end of the term, on the last day of class (TUESDAY, APRIL 28).
Grading is as follows:
Quizzes - 15% of course grade
Midterm - 25% of course grade
Final - 50% of course grade
Essay - 10% of course grade

All course requirements must be completed on time for a passing grade, and in accordance with the regulations as stated in the Student Handbook. Please pay special attention to the discussion concerning plagiarism -- I will catch you if you copy material from the WEB!!!

Class will not be held on Thursday April 9 & Thursday, April 16. Thus there will be 24 class sessions, with one of those devoted to the midterm.
