The sites in this section are maintained by self-proclaimed atheists or agnostics. I do not, a priori, identify atheism with anti-Catholicism or even hostility to Christianity. The sites listed here, however, are overtly hostile to Christianity in general, and contain anti-Catholic material or links. A common theme in in these sites is the identification of the Church as a force for tyranny, ignorance and superstition. In this sense they are continuing the anti-Catholicism of the radical Enlightenment. Issues which appear frequently are abortion, birth control and the treatment of women. (Note that opposing the Church's stand on abortion does not, in itself, constitute anti-Catholicism.)
An extensive on-line library of material about atheism. Of interest are works like those of Joseph McCabe in their historical library, and a discussion of philosophy at Catholic universities.
Originally, this site was a collection of articles explaining why, in the author's opinion, "Christians Suck." Catholics come in for occasional mention in his discussion. Prior to 2000, this site contained an autobiographical article about Catholic schools, but the site moved, was re-organized and the article disappeared. I mention this since antipathy towards Catholic education is one theme which links secular and religious anti-Catholicism. (For an example of the latter, see the article in the Former Catholics For Christ newsletter.)
Since the site moved, it has been incorporated into the Satanism2000 web site.
Web site for an organization "protecting the constitutional principle of the separation of state and church." Produces a newsletter and books for freethinkers. Of interest is their fascination with black collar crimes, crimes committed by priests and ministers, particularly sexual abuse. Reporting this information is not in itself evidence of anti-Catholicism---even Catholic papers (though often reluctantly) report on these issues. But in this particular instance I feel that it is one manifestation of their overall hostility towards Catholicism (and Christianity). Also of interest is a personal testimony from their newsletter by a former priest, Tom Reed, now an atheist. It has similarities to the testimonies of ex-Catholics found on the religious anti-Catholic web sites.
A web site maintained by Fredric L. Rice and others, to document the history and current practice of "destructive groups," which appears to include all religious groups, including Catholics. Their attitude towards Catholicism seems well summarized in an open letter posted by "Caroline." As with other groups, they have a fascination with sexual abuse committed by priests.
The web site for an organization which describes itself as "educational foundation devoted to restoring balance between Humans and the remaining species on Earth." It is difficult to determine how serious the site is: the four pillars of the Church are suicide, abortion, cannibalism and sodomy. In an interview, the founder, Chris Korda, identifies himself as anti-Catholic and buttresses this with a variety of anti-Catholic remarks.
A web log written by Jody Wheeler. Included at the request of Mr. Wheeler,
who wrote: I'm just a little upset that my page,
www.nakedwriting.com, didn't find its way onto your very valuable list. For
over a year now, I've taken up the cause of pointing out how religion in general
and the Catholic Church in particular is little more than tyranny, repression
and superstition presented with a popular face. In the archives
on religion he has a variety of comments about Catholicism,
all quite negative.
(Defunct as of 08/10/04) Site maintained by Greg Erwin, former vice-president of the Humanist Association of Canada. Of interest are two documents: the transcript of a mock trial of Pope John Paul II on charges of crimes against humanity (reprinted from the New Internationalist magazine); a guide to getting excommunicated from the Catholic Church.
A collection of rather juvenile antireligious humor with some anti-Catholic pieces.
While somewhat hard to believe from the name, this site appears to be quite serious. They describe themselves as a religious organization, but this site has more affinity to the secular sites given here than the religious sites discussed elsewhere. It contains hostile comments about Church teaching and prominent figures in it. See, for example, their comments on Mother Theresa and Cardinal Bernadin.
