Emilio Gentile is professor of contemporary history at the University of Rome. He is the author of The Sacralization of Politics in Fascist Italy, The Struggle for Modernity: Nationalism, Futurism and Fascism, The Origin of Fascist Ideology, and the forthcoming Politics as Religion. His article was translated from the Italian by John Alcorn.

 Anne C. Loveland is T. Harry Williams Professor Emerita at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and the author of books including American Evangelicals and the U.S. Military, 1942-1993.

 Marc Stern is assistant executive director of the American Jewish Congress and one of the nation’s foremost experts on the law of church and state.
